~ Yusuf to Frau Totenkinder, Fables #44 — "Arabian Nights (and Days), Chapter Three: Back to Baghdad" |
Yusuf is a human Fable from the Homelands version of Baghdad, who was Sinbad's minister. He first appears in Fables #42 — "Arabian Nights (and Days), Chapter One: Broken English." In an attempt to obliterate Fabletown and its residents, Yusuf released a d'jinn from a bottle, seeking to gain control over the European and Arabian Fable communities. Unfortunately for him, Frau Totenkinder utilized her magical powers to alter his language, causing his commands to deviate from his true intentions, which ultimately led to his prolonged demise and the d'jinn's recapture.
History
Yusuf serves as the minister to Sinbad, and the two had scheduled a meeting with the Mayor of Fabletown, representing the Homelands version of Baghdad. Unfortunately, due to recent events, and sending Mowgli off to find Bigby Wolf, Prince Charming had forgotten. Another problem was that no one could speak Arabic and Yusuf's wasn't well taught in English. Eventually after many hours, King Cole came and impressed Sinbad with his knowledge of the Arabic language.[1] With Cole's help, Sinbad developed fast friendships with King Cole and Prince Charming, whom eventually convinced him that keeping slaves was wrong. Slowly, Sinbad became very intrigued by America's new laws and ways. However, Yusuf found it disgraceful.[3]
Eventually, he released a d'jinn from a bottle, in order to destroy Fabletown and its citizens and put him in control of both the European and Arabian fable communities.[3] However, he didn't count on Frau Totenkinder guessing a possible traitor amongst them. Although Frau didn't speak Arabic, she did use her magic powers to warp his language, so that the commands he gave were not what he intended, ultimately leading to his own prolonged demise and the recapture of the d'jinn.[4]
After two days, the sounds of Yusuf's screams persist from the depths of the dungeon, where the d'jinn is slowly devouring him. When inquired about the reason for such a drawn-out ordeal, Totenkinder elucidates that the spell could only be adjusted to reflect the fate he desired for his adversaries. To intervene and end his suffering would completely nullify the spell's power.[2]
