Wooden puppets are a Fable species that began with the creation of Pinocchio by the Blue Fairy's magic and Geppetto's woodcarving talent. They first appear in a brief flashback in Fables #4 — "Chapter Four: Remembrance Day." Geppetto, alone, sought to fashion beings like Pinocchio, to create an army. However, he lacked the Blue Fairy's magical nature and so abducted her to forcibly tap her power in creating more wooden puppets.
Psychological characteristics
By the magic used to craft them, most if not all of the wooden puppets are inherently loyal to Geppetto.[1]
Physiology
As the name implies, wooden puppets are crafted out of wood from the Sacred Grove. They ordinarily appear very human in appearance, with the Emperor being one of the few exceptions. Their parts may also be enchanted to pass as living flesh among humans.[2]
Powers and abilities
- Superhuman endurance: As living wooden puppets, they are resistant to bodily harm, to an extent, and feel no physical pain. During their assault against Fabletown, several wooden puppets were lit on fire and while admittedly they would have burned to ash, in the meantime this didn't deter their fighting capacity in the least.
- Anatomical liberation: Wooden puppets can separate parts of their body and reattach them. They can even take the body of other wooden puppets and reassemble them onto others.[3]
Weaknesses
- Fire: Being made of wood, the puppets are vulnerable to fire. However, as pointed out by Pinocchio, since they are made of hardwood, they won't burn quickly.[3]
- Magic: Wooden Puppets seemed susceptible to the effects of magic. This is inclusive of mystical objects, such as the Vorpal Sword.
- Shotguns: While guns were almost useless against wooden puppets, Prince Charming claimed shotguns to their face were somewhat effective.[3]
