The moon is an anthromorphic Fable moon who lives at the Farm. She first appears in Fables #6 — "Road Trip: Part One of Animal Farm."
History
The moon is the moon of another land, and is much smaller and nearer than Earth's moon, so the cow Luna can easily jump over it, although it's still a remarkable accomplishment for a cow.[1] While hiding at the keep at world's end, Luna referred to herself as a cow who's been to the moon and back.[3]
The moon and Luna appear in the barn at the Farm, present at a gathering of Fable creatures discussing whether they should take up arms against the Adversary. Coincidentally, Snow White arrives at the Farm just as she does twice a year to check on the Fable community there, and walks in on them. The creatures are shocked when they notice her sudden presence in the room.[4]
The moon,[5] along with numerous other Farm Fables, is enlisted to journey to New York City and join the defense of Fabletown when the wooden soldiers plot an attack on the secret Fable society.[6] Amidst the battle, the moon, Luna and Mr. Toad participate in the fight by letting Toad ride Luna while holding a basket filled with grenades. Luna is accompanied by the moon as she leaps through the air, passing over the enemy, as Mr. Toad drops the grenades onto them.[5]
The moon becomes the victim of a serial killer, Goldilocks, who is after the women of Fabletown: Goldilocks, transformed into a replica of Snow White, discovers Snow's sister, Rose Red, who is enjoying a peaceful break in the fields of the Farm beneath the watchful gaze of the moon above. While the moon observes, Goldilocks stabs Rose in the chest with the Maerorgladi, the Sword of Regret. The moon reacts in horror and confronts the killer. For every victim of intent, Maerorgladi will take temporary control of its wielder to slay a second random victim, so Goldilocks propers the sword upward, and it strikes the moon squarely in the eye. The moon descends with great speed, landing forcefully on Rose Red's lifeless form, breaking apart partially as it collides with the ground, creating a loud bang that causes the earth to shudder. Reynard the Fox, watching from afar, observes the incident and decides to investigate. Upon arriving at the scene, he discovers their lifeless bodies. He takes Cinderella to the location of the incident, and she is horrified by what she sees before her. Although Rose Red is resurrected by Cinderella, the moon is not, as Cindy can only bring half of Goldilock's victims back to life, and Rose matters more to the safety of the Farm than the moon.[2]

Original source
The moon is based on the character from the nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle." The poem goes:
Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
