I was washed up on the shores of another world.
~ Rapunzel, Fairest #9 — "The Hidden Kingdom Chapter Two: Hard-Boiled Wonderland"

The Hidden Kingdom is a Fable world that is the Homelands version of Japan. It debuts in Fairest #8 — "The Hidden Kingdom Chapter One: Big in Japan."

Description

The Hidden Kingdom was ruled by an Emperor, who was referred to as Heika. The people of this world lived side by side with creatures from Japanese folklore, including the funa yurei,[1] kappa,[1] the legendary tanuki,[1] kitsune like Tomoko,[1] kirin[2] and other, assorted yokai.[1]

History

Nine hundred years ago, Rapunzel sailed off the edge of the world and washed up on the shore of another world. She was found by the citizens of the Hidden Kingdom, and was welcomed into the Celestial Palace by the Heika. They had enjoyed long decades of peace, and there was no cause to be wary of outsiders. However, his advisor Ryogan, the Seii Taishogun, had begun to bend the Emperor's ear to his puritanical beliefs: Three years after Rapunzel's arrival, the Heika, convinced of Ryogan's plan, began to exile all of the yokai residents from the court. After the kitsune Tomoko was taken away,[1] Ryogan began using her foxfire to enforce his will and influence the Emperor to suit his interests.[2]

The exiled yokai lived in hiding in the forest. Rapunzel discovered that Ryogan had been planning a coup against the Emperor, with the help of the Adversary. Ryogan and the Adversary's armies soon made their advance on the emperor's palace, slaughtering everyone inside.[2] Rapunzel, having been dumped down a well by Ryogan, began eating her own hair, which she vomited up in the form of bezoars. After climbing out of the well,[2] she killed Ryogan and left the city behind, not bothering to look back at how her bezoars were breaking it down into dust. Tomoko led the yokai into sanctuary in the mundane world.[3]

In the present-day mundane world, Rapunzel finally acquires the ability to control the bezoars,[3] granting permission for all the exiled yokai to finally return. They all go back to the Hidden Kingdom, aiming to close the gate behind them forever.[4]

Locations

The Celestial City was where[3] the Celestial Palace, the home of the royal family and the Emperor's seat of power, was located.[1] The entire city was destroyed by Rapunzel's bezoars, which she was unable to control.[3]
