Lauda and her sisters
Snow White and Rose Red's maternal lineage is an ancient bloodline of very magical women that goes back at least five centuries, and is notable for bearing a terrible curse, known only as the winnowing.
This bloodline's known members have all been powerful and incredibly naturally magical. It is revealed by the the Cricket on the Hearth that this bloodline has a generational struggle to inherit incredible power. The family is also cursed with an inherent bloodlust against one's siblings and the inability to produce sons, only birthing daughters.
History
The origin of this bloodline is not exactly known. According to the Cricket on the Hearth, an unnamed goddess is the one who "began the whole megillah."[1]
Eventually, a member of this bloodline purposely had thirteen children. When she had finally gone through menopause, she took Lauda, her youngest daughter, aside and warned her to run away because of the "winnowing." Lauda reassured her mother that she would be fine, and focused most of her efforts on drawing in any stray power relinquished by the death of her sisters.
Eventually, Rose Red came to the conclusion that, while not inexplicably confirmed, their family's curse may have been broken or at least weakened.[2]
