Red Riding Hood's grandmother is a human Fable who appears briefly in a set of flashbacks from the Homelands. She debuts in Fables #23 — "Our Second Amendment Issue: Chapter Four — March of the Wooden Soldiers."

History

Back in the Homelands, the Woodsman, a constant drunk who relies on stealing from the homes of others to survive, happened to hear the grandmother conversing with the local blacksmith about her lovely granddaughter Red Riding Hood, who will soon be visiting and bringing a basket full of treats. He tails the grandmother to her cottage, planning to claim the treats for himself and rape her granddaughter. However, he succumbs to his intoxication and blacks out. He awakens to the sound of screaming and rushes into the cottage to stop whoever is trying to take what he had planned to take for himself, only to discover that the house is under attack from the fearsome Big Bad Wolf, who lunges towards him. Without hesitation, he raises his magical axe and strikes down the wolf in an act of self-defense.[1]

As Red and her grandmother watch, the Woodsman cuts the wolf open,[2] fills his belly with rocks[3][2] and throws him in the[3][2] river[3] to drown.[3][2] Ironically, after defeating the Big Bad Wolf and rescuing Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, the Woodsman is hailed as a hero.[1]

Notes

  1. As shown in Fables #23 — "Our Second Amendment Issue: Chapter Four, March of the Wooden Soldiers" and Fables: The Wolf Among Us #12 — "Chapter Twelve," Red Riding Hood and her grandmother were attacked by the Big Bad Wolf, who is confirmed to be from the Hesse, in Fables #151 — "The Black Forest Chapter One: Greenjack." This suggests that Red and her grandmother are also from the Hesse.
