Because I am about to initiate a powerful working, King Cole, and embark on a great journey. Such tales the mundys will spin from this. How wonderful the way they absorb our stories.
~ Frau Totenkinder about mundies in Fables #88 — "Totenkinder: Chapter Two of Witches."

Mundy,[2] or the mundane,[2] is the Fables' slang term, often used pejoratively,[1] for humans citizens native to Earth,[2] their technology, or the world itself.[3] They are not part of any fairy tales, and apart from a very few cases, the mundies are generally unaware of the existence of the Fables and magic in general.

Beliefs[]

To the mundy population, the Fables and their exploits are nothing more than fairytales, folklore, myth or even nursery rhymes.[1] Depending on the popularity of the stories, the Fables seem to accordingly grow in power.[4]

Mundane World[]

They call this the mundy world because magic is scant here. The most powerful and ambitious have ignored this land because of that. Dismissed it as insignificant.
~ The North Wind describing the mundane world to Mister Dark in Fables #99 — "Dark City."

The mundane world seems to contain miniature versions of every Homeland world Fablekind'd originally come from. For example, in the mundane world there is a small island nation called England that mirrors the entire world they once knew as Albion; the country called Russia is a rough sixteenth-scale sketch of the vast old world of The Rus; Ireland resembles the world of Erin; and infant America slowly grew into an approximation of Americana. For some as yet undiscovered reason, or perhaps for no reason at all since some truly remarkable things do seem to be the result of mere (or possibly mighty) chance, the mundane world has turned out to be a map of sorts for all the much grander ones the Fables had left behind.[1]

Also, despite being classified as a world of scant and miserly magic by modern times,[5][6] there exists some cases of native mystical phenomenon, such as Nick Slick[7] and Grandfather Oak.[8] The North Wind was also convinced that the mundy world was actually a place of vast magic, hidden and deep, in a particularly unrecognized form.[6]

Points of Interest[]

New York City[]

New York City is a major city in the United States. It consists of 5 major boroughs (smaller cities) those include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. These 5 boroughs are primarily where most Fables in the video game The Wolf Among Us live. Although, some Fables choose to live somewhere else, like the Jersey Devil who lives in New Jersey. New York City is also the home of Fabletown, located in the main borough of Manhattan.

The Wolf Among Us[]

In The Wolf Among Us, there is an entry within the Book of Fables:

Short for "mundane", mundy is a catch-all term that Fables use to refer to the non-magical inhabitants of their adopted home. Warding spells placed around the blocks of Fabletown and The Farm keep their minds distracted and dull within certain boundaries. However, if anything should pique the curiosity or scrutiny of a large group of mundies, these magical protection charms would overload and fail. As sheriff of Fabletown, one of Bigby's primary functions is ensuring the Fabletown community maintains a low profile.
