The magic beans are first mentioned in Fables #2 — "Chapter Two: The (Un)Usual Suspects." They are beans with magical powers, which can be used to plant trans-dimensional beanstalks with roots firmly anchored in one world while their towering peaks reached into the Cloud Kingdoms.[1]

History

Jack Horner claimed he had purchased a set of five magic beans, the only ones known to exist. In a fit of anger at what he had done, his mother flung them out the window. Later, Jack sneaked out to retrieve the beans, but he could only find four. The following day, he was astonished to find that one of the beans had sprouted into a towering beanstalk.[3]

However, according to Bigby Wolf, Jack actually lost the beans centuries ago, "if he ever had them at all." That didn't stop him from trying to make a profit of them: At one point, Jack attempted to sell a fake map revealing the whereabouts of the remaining beans.[2]

He later insisted that he still had the remaining four beans and attempted to convince Thrushbeard to join him in planting one of them and embarking on an adventure to the Cloud Kingdoms, with Thrushbeard providing the funds. However, Thrushbeard saw right through his scheme.[3]

In the end, it was discovered that the Fabletown authorities never took Jack's claims of possessing any remaining beans seriously, as they already had them in their possession. Using a magical bean, they grew an enormous beanstalk on the Farm, which Bigby climbed to reach the Cloud Kingdoms and deal a devastating blow to their enemy, the Adversary.[1]
