~ The ladybug literally bugs Mister Sunflower and Rockford J. Raccoon, Fairest #29 — "Sail Away: Chapter Three of The Clamour for Glamour" |
The ladybug is an insect Fable who lives at the Farm and debuts in Fables #6 — "Road Trip: Part One of Animal Farm." While the character has multiple background appearances across the Fables series, they are featured more prominently in an issue of Fairest.
History
Exile
The ladybug was one of King Noble's loyal subjects in the Homelands, and lived in a vast sprawling valley which was occupied by the armies of the Adversary. At first, the invaders let Noble continue to rule, as long as he kept his subjects pacified and paid taxes to the Empire. However, they were not allowed to celebrate Christmas, and the enemy seized the forest's magic gateway that lead to the mundane world, and arrested anyone who attempted to flee through it. Noble and his people, desiring freedom from the evil oppressors, eventually found a way to escape through the gateway after Reynard the Fox tricked the enemy into leaving it unguarded for one night, and tricked the goblin armies into leaving food for all the animal Fables.[1]
Goldilocks' revolution
The ladybug appear in the barn, present at a gathering of Fable creatures discussing whether they should take up arms against the Adversary. Coincidentally, Snow White arrives at the Farm just as she does twice a year to check on the Fable community there, and walks in on them. The animals are shocked when they notice her sudden presence in the room.[2]
The little insect is one of the Fables who aligns with Goldilocks' rebels in their scheme to overthrow the human residents of Fabletown. It is present when Rose Red arms herself in a cave and when she apprehends her sister Snow White in the same cave shortly after.[3] The ladybug observes with keen interest as Rose informs her sister that she is placing her for crimes against Fablekind.[4]
Later, the ladybug stands among the many animal Fables gathered in the Farm square as Dun speaks to the crowd, announcing that the time has come to make a move on Fabletown in New York City. However, the plans are swiftly put to an end when Snow, through the intimidation of the three giant brothers and the dragon Clara, forces the group to surrender.[4]
When the revolution teeters on the edge of erupting once more after Goldilocks shoots Snow, a faction of human Fables swiftly seize control. The ladybug is sent flying through the air while Bufkin the flying monkey chases Chicken Little.[5]
New leadership
After Rose Red takes charge of the Farm, the Ladybug is seated on a filing cabinet in the administration office while Rose is on a phone call with Jack Horner.[6]
Invasion of the wooden soldiers
When Baba Yaga's hut runs amok on the Farm, the Ladybug, resting on a stone, takes in the sight of a group of animal Fables engaged in a frantic struggle to control the cabin that is racing uncontrollably through the forest.[7]
Fabletown-imperial war
The ladybug attends a meeting in the Farm square, during which Boy Blue offers the Fables living on the Farm a chance to relocate to the Kingdom of Haven and begin anew. During the meeting, the ladybug, two members of the Mounted Police, and a snail, sit comfortably on top of the Tortoise's shell.[8]
The glamour Lottery
In a desperate attempt to increase their chances of winning the glamour Lottery, Mister Sunflower and Rockford J. Raccoon try to steal one of the coveted books containing lucky numbers. Raccoon even considers forging additional books to further boost their odds. Unfortunately, their conversation is overheard by the ladybug, who has been hiding on Sunflower's body this whole time; they have literally been bugged. The ladybug makes its presence known to Sunflower by declaring, "I heard that!" The clever little bug proceeds to report both of them to the man in charge of printing the ballots. The man retrieves his book while the ladybug watches, the little bug gleefully declaring, "You're sooo busted!" The man forcefully removes the two troublemakers from the print room and forbids them from entering again. He promises to inform Clara and Sergeant Wilfred of their actions.[9]
Goodbye to the Farm
As a result of some of the human Fables accidentally being transformed into animals during the glamour casting, the Farm is partially wrecked. [10] Surrounded by the rubble of what used to be the Farm, the ladybug is joined by a group of Fable creatures. They are forced to come to terms with a harsh truth: Fabletown in New York City has been exposed to the mundys, and it's only a matter of time before they discover the Farm as well.[11]
The ladybug appears to have made the decision to stay on the Farm, as it is spotted there many years later, sitting in the grass while observing Cinderella motivate Pinocchio to campaign for presidency in the future.[12]
