Fee, fi, fo, fum! We smell the blood of an Englishman! Be he alive, or be he dead--we'll grind his bones to make our bread!
~ Johnny, Donny and Lonny to Rose Red, Fables #59 — "Burning Questions"

Johnny, Donny and Lonny,[2] also known as the "Three Little Pigs" part two,[2] are three giant Fable brothers who live at the Farm. After spending several centuries of magically induced slumber, they were transformed into new incarnations of the Three Little Pigs. They first appear in Fables #8 — "The Pirates of Upstate New York: Part Three of Animal Farm."

History

Homelands

At some point, the three giants Johnny, Lonny and Donny, along with the dragon Clara, came to the mundane world. Thinking that they were much too noticeable to leave walking around, the leadership of Fabletown decided to put a spell on the giants and the dragon in order to make them slumber eternally.[3]

Goldilocks' revolution

While running from Goldilocks's revolutionary forces, Snow White comes across the three sleeping brothers in the Valley of the Big Sleepers and is awestruck by what she sees.[5] Afterward, the giants and the dragon are awakened by Snow White to defend against the Farm's revolutionaries. Snow declares to the rebels that their self-proclaimed revolution has come to an end and commands all individuals to relinquish their firearms and disperse. She compels the surrender of the group through the intimidation of the Big Sleepers.[3]

Afterward, they don't wish to return to their slumber, but keeping them fed threatens to strip the Farm bare, so a compromise is reached which sees the giants transformed to become the new Three Little Pigs, as the previous ones are no more and someone is needed to fill their role so that the story still matches mundy expectations.[2]

New leadership

As Rose Red settles into her new position, the new Three Little Pigs are spotted in the Farm square while Rose is on a phone call with Jack Horner.[6]

The pigs are later observed sleeping peacefully in their beds at daybreak while Rose Red exits the barn.[7]

At the Fabletown election for a new mayor, the Three Little Pigs patiently queue up at the Farm, each clutching a ballot in their curly tails. They eagerly await their turn to cast their votes and engage in a lively conversation about their chosen candidates. One pig asks, "Did you vote to let Prince Charming in?" and Donny respond by spouting the iconic line from the fairy tale, "Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin."[8]

New neighbors

As Snow White settles into the Farm with her newborn cubs, the pigs joins the multitude of animal Fables who assemble to greet their new neighbor in the Farm square.[9]

Following the mysterious demise of Mary's Little Lamb, the three pigs observe as Doctor Swineheart carefully investigates the body within the Farm square.[10]

As Rose Red and Boy Blue toil away on the Farm one day, the three pigs saunter over, reciting a famous line from "Jack and the Beanstalk," and teasingly insinuating they will squish them with their feet — despite no longer having giant stature to actually do so.[4]

Johnny, Donny and Lonney are also among the Farm Fables listening to Boy Blue as he recounts the story of the Adversary's recent ill-fated attack on the Kingdom of Haven.[11]

Fabletown-Imperial war

Johnny, Donny and Lonny are seen with a collection of animal Fables as they come across a notice posted on the Farm, summoning them to a crucial gathering in the Farm square at midday. They attends the meeting, during which Boy Blue offers the Fables living on the Farm a chance to relocate to Haven and begin anew. One of the pigs inquires if they will be restricted from leaving Haven, just as they are not allowed to venture beyond Farm. Blue clarifies that they are free to come and go as they please, but anything outside of Haven still belongs to the Empire and they won't have any protection there.[12]

Threat of Mister Dark

Boy Blue's death

When Boy Blue is on his deathbed, a variety of Fables, both human and animal, gather outside the main house at the Farm. Two of the Three Little Pigs stand by as Flycatcher delivers the heartbreaking news that he was unable to save him.[13]

After Boy Blue's funeral, one of the pigs attends a small informal wake for Blue in the barn, and is spotted walking through the Farm square afterward.[14]

Cult of Blue

The three pigs attend a sermon where Brock Blueheart preaches with great conviction that Boy Blue will one day return from the dead to slay the Fables' great foe Mister Dark and usher in a new age of power and glory.[15]

As Rose Red and Jack Horner are having loud sex in Rose's bedroom, one of the pigs joins a group of animal Fables assembled at the staircase, all eagerly listening to the commotion from upstairs. The two remaining pigs attend a gathering where Jack Horner, pretending to be Boy Blue, addresses the Fables in the Farm square. They are both wearing blue scarfs, indicating that they have joined Brock's cult.[16]

When Jack Frost goes after Jack Horner, the Three Little Pigs join a team of animal Fables who rally to the latter's defense. During the fight, two of the pigs are flung through the air. All three pigs are now wearing the blue scarfs of Brock's cult. After discovering that Jack had been pretending to be Boy Blue, the pigs team up with an enraged crowd who demands that Sheriff Beast surrenders Jack for retribution.[17]

Rose Red's return

The Three Little Pigs are among the Fables who watch as the dryads; Princess Alder and Prince Aspen, arrive at the main square of the Farm, accompanied by their new employer, Geppetto.[18]

Johnny, Donny and Lonny later watch as Rose Red addresses her fellow Fables after finally overcoming her long depression. They also witness Bellflower's arrival at the Farm with her fiance Dunster Happ.[19]

As Beauty, heavily pregnant, thinks that her water has broken, the White Rabbit is quick to realize that Beauty is in fact bleeding profusely. The rabbit points out the concerning fact that humans are not supposed to experience excessive bleeding during childbirth, using the colloquial phrase "bleed like a stuck pig." The rabbit's comment upsets one of the Three Little Pigs, who inquires if there was any need for him to make such a hurtful remark towards pigs.[20]

Kingdom of Haven

To escape the wrath of Mister Dark, all the Fables are forced to relocate to the Kingdom of Haven,[20] where Brock Blueheart addresses a gathering of animal Fables and shares his vision of Boy Blue returning from the dead to defeat the Dark One in glorious fashion. Two of the pigs are among those present for the sermon.[21]

The glamour crusade

One day, the Three Little Pigs join the other animal Fables in the barn to hear Reynard the Fox's latest tales of his adventures. The newly recruited knight of Rose Red's new Round Table has gained the power to switch between human and fox forms whenever he desires, and everyone is eager to hear about his experiences. He distributes gifts and presents the pigs with a champagne coaster that is said to have once belonged to Prince Charming. This results in considerable delight for the pigs. However, Mister Sunflower rallies the animal Fables to speak up and demand the glamours that Prince Charming had promised them when he was elected mayor. The three pigs and many other animal Fables join him as he leads a raucous protest in the center of the Farm. They shout for their glamours and hold up signs as they make their voices heard.[22]

After Charming resigned from his job as Mayor, King Cole took over the position, so Rose Red urgently summons him to the Farm. The Three Little Pigs join the group of demonstrators outside the main building as Cole remains inside, still demanding for glamours.[22] In the evening, the same group of angry protesters corner King Cole, with Sunflower claiming that Charming has passed on the leadership to him, and with it comes the same promises and responsibilities.[23]

Shortly afterward, the pigs attend a gathering in the Farm square, where King Cole and Rose Red announce that the 13th Floor magicians will create a handful of glamours that can be shared between animals, giving them all a chance to experience life outside their usual surroundings for a brief time.[23]

When Luna drinks from the through next to the Farm's well, she points out to the Three Little Pigs that the water has an oddly sweet taste, leading Clara to figure out who is responsible for stealing one of the new glamours.[24]

The pigs are thereafter among the numerous animal fables present at the time the winners of the Lottery for the new glamours are declared, as well as when the glamours are conferred upon them.[25]

Farewell

Two of the Three Little Pigs can be spotted in a panel among a group of animal Fables at the Farm bidding farewell to the readers in Fables #150.[26]

Alternate universe

An alternate version of one of the Three Little Pigs appears in The Unwritten Fables, which takes place in an alternate universe where Mister Dark was never defeated. The pig is one of the many Fables who joined an exodus lead by Flycatcher and Red Riding Hood into the magic grove in Haven. He is present at a gathering outside the gingerbread house of Frau Totenkinder, while the witch converses with Tom Taylor inside.[27] He also observes the Fables as they transport the felled trees from the sacred grove to make new wooden soldiers for Flycatcher, and appears in the camp next to Jack Pumpkinhead as the survivors craft new weapons.[28]

The three giants are based on the titular characters of the fairy tale of "The Three Little Pigs."

Trivia

Two times, Johnny, Donny and Lonny make references to "Jack and the Beanstalk": In Fables #59 — "Burning Questions," the three spout a version of the iconic line from the fairy tale: "Fee, fi, fo fum, We smell the blood of an Englishman! Be he alive or be he dead, we'll grind his bones to make our bread!" In Fairest #27 — "Mister Fox Goes to Town: Chapter One of The Clamour for Glamour," one of the trio examines a champagne coaster and remarks, "I smell the booze of an English man!"; a pun on the original line.
