“ | He didn’t like having me around anymore—not since you pushed your way into our lives. I think I reminded him too much of what it was like in the old days when we were constantly out on some adventure together. No more. All he wanted now was to drink and nap. More accurately to drink enough every day until he could sleep. First drink in the afterlife’s on me, boss. | „ |
~ Iago Warduck to the new Jack in the Green, Fables #161 — "The Black Forest Chapter Eleven: The Fight in the Dog" |
Iago Warduck is an avian Fable from the world of the Hesse, who first appears in Fables #151 — "The Black Forest Chapter One: Greenjack." He is the companion of the former Jack in the Green, and the two reside together in the Last Story Home. After Jack is brutally murdered by Peter Pan, the duck finds solace living with the Wolf family.
History
Background
Iago Warduck[1] is the faithful companion of Jack in the Green,[3] the Protector of the Forest,[2] and the duo was constantly on adventures together in the past. They reside together in the Last Story Home[1] in the Black Forest of the Hesse;[2] a home which Iago helped build over the course of six hundred years.[1] By the time the Wolf family settles down in the Black Forest, Jack has finally retired from his previous job, but stays with Iago in the Last Story Home for his golden years.[2]
Jack's successor
One day, Iago hears mysterious howling from down in the valley. He asks Jack about this, but Jack points out that howling is to be expected from a forest. However, Iago states that it sounded like a wolf's howl, and they haven't had wolves in that location for a long time. Jack asks his companion what he expects him to do about it, since he has retired now. Little do they know, that the howling emanates from the Wolf family's cubs, as the family has recently found their new home in that very place. However, their conversation is abruptly interrupted when the new Jack in the Green arrives at the Last Story Home.[2]
When the new Jack in the Green announces her plan to take up residence in the Last Story Home, her predecessor raises an objection, claiming that he has lived there for decades. Iago clarifies the matter by asserting that Jack has been living there for centuries and emphasizes how old Jack is. Thankfully, the new Jack is open to sharing the home with her predecessor.[4]
Jack's murder
Upon returning from an errand, Iago discovers Jack's lifeless body,[3] having been slain by Peter Pan.[5] The duck is filled with despair, thinking he could have protected Jack if he had been there. He states to Jack's successor that Jack kept sending him on needless errands because he didn't like having him around anymore after the new Jack pushed her way into their lives. Iago believes that it reminded Jack too much of what it was like in the old days, when the two were constantly on an adventure together. The new Jack declares that her predecessor will be avenged.[3]
Iago takes up a sword and partners with Jack's successor and Mrs. Bear, as the new Jack successfully tracks down Pan and Tinker Bell. When Pan refuses to surrender, the new Jack in the Green releases a Thanatos Arrow, which shatters the magical constraints that force Tinker Bell to do Pan's bidding. Iago watches in astonishment as the fairy breaks free from Pan's control, kidnaps Pan and makes a swift escape.[1]
The Wolf family
Iago leaves the house after Jack's death, convinced that it is too haunted by his presence, and instead finds solace staying the rest of his years with the Wolf family. Putting his building skills into good use, he diligently assists in constructing the growing Wolf family home, although he tends to irritate Sam, another volunteer who lives with the family. As Sam proceeds to update the readers on what happened to the characters the following centuries, he directly addresses the readers, causing Iago to question who he is speaking to.[1]
