Hadeon the Destroyer is the evil fairy who cursed Briar Rose. She first appears in Fairest #2 — "Run! Chapter Two of Wide Awake."
History
Hadeon is the ruler of the Forest of Dire Blight, in the Homelands. Even though she was the one to actually cast the curse over Briar Rose, the Fables story arc "War and Pieces" and Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love #6 — "Part Six: Ever After" imply that Frau Totenkinder was its creator.
In Fairest, Briar defeats Hadeon once and for all when the latter shows up to pick a fight with the Snow Queen — because Hadeon likes to pick a fight every century or so, to keep her tools honed. Hadeon nearly defeats Lumi, but Briar Rose, wanting revenge for what Hadeon did to her as a baby, decides to take matters into her own hands. It is revealed that because Hadeon cast the curse on Briar Rose all those years ago, Briar has become immune to her magic. Briar defeats Hadeon with a few solid punches to the jaw. Her fairy godmothers turn Hadeon into a car that can travel to any world, and the spaces between worlds. The car has to serve one thousand times before it will revert to Hadeon. Briar uses the car to get back to Fabletown, before lending it to Bigby Wolf, who is searching for his lost cubs, Darien and Therese. When the car has been used nine hundred and ninety-nine times, Briar plans to take it to the junkyard and have Hadeon destroyed once and for all by dropping it into a car crusher.
However, Hadeon's ultimate fate is given in the chapter story Fables #149 — "The Last Story of Briar Rose." After many years of adventuring, Briar Rose, who had been scratched by an undead blade, begins to succumb to a zombie-like curse. She returns to Fabletown to collect Hadeon, who has exactly one ride left before returning to her own form. Briar Rose commands Hadeon to take her "to the end of the universe" and then pricks her finger, declaring that if she must turn into an undead horror, she will not be awake for it and will keep her oath to prevent Hadeon from harming anyone ever again.
Original source
Hadeon the Destroyer is based on the aged fairy who cursed the titular character in the Charles Perrault version of the "Sleeping Beauty" fairy tale. In the Perrault version of the fairy tale, the titular character has seven fairy godmothers, like in the comics; and is cursed by an aged fairy that no one thought to invite to the girl's christening.[1] In the Brothers Grimm's version, they are thirteen "wise women," but the thirteenth is not invited, because the King only had twelve gold plates from which they could eat.[2]
Etymology
The name "Hadeon" is actually a Ukrainian boy's name and means "destroyer,"[3] making Hadeon's alias of "Hadeon the Destroyer" a fitting one. Hadeon's name was invented for the comics; in the original fairy tale, all eight fairies are unnamed.
