Dickory is one of Cinderella's animal spies, who possesses the unique ability to manipulate time, thereby enabling him to move at lightning speed between the ticks of a clock. He first appears in Fables #6 — "Road Trip: Part One of Animal Farm."
History
Goldilocks' revolution
Dickory is a mouse whose magic can manipulate time and works as one of Cinderella's espionage assets.[1]
Dickory appears in the barn, perched atop of a clock, at a gathering of Fable creatures discussing whether they should take up arms against the Adversary. Coincidentally, Snow White arrives at the Farm just as she does twice a year to check on the Fable community there, and walks in on them. The group is shocked when they notice her sudden presence in the room.[2]
The next day, Dickory watches as Boo Bear and Red Cap work together to remove Colin's severed head from its gruesome display in the center of the Farm square. In the midst of the Farm's revolution orchestrated by Goldilocks, Dickory finds hismelf watching as Posey shows a potential recruit, Rose Red, all the weapons they have acquired. Later that evening, Dickory stationed outside the main building with a selection of Fable creatures, patiently waiting for Rose to come out and join them.[3]
Following the unsuccessful revolution, Fabletown conducts war trials. Dickory watches as Reynard the Fox has his case assessed and is informed that no charges will be brought against him.[4]
Cinderella's spy
Cinderella brings Dickory, Puss in Boots and Jenny Wren together for a mission in Dubai where an unknown magical artifact was discovered to be in use. The three animals are based at the Farm, but Cindy equips herself with a bracelet that can call each of them to her if she requires their assistance.[1]
Cindy's mission eventually reveals that her Fairy Godmother has led a coup in Ultima Thule — one of the Homelands with months long day and night cycles — and is smuggling in weapons from the mundane world to consolidate her strength before midnight fell and sapped her powers. However, Cindy calls upon Dickory who uses his abilities to manipulate the clock and see that nighttime comes to Thule earlier than expected, allowing Cinderella to defeat her godmother.[5]
New mission
Amidst the chaos of an attack by unknown rat ninjas, Snow White sends Dickory to find Cinderella in Thailand. Upon arrival, he discovers Cinderella being held captive by trolls. With his sharp teeth, Dickory chews through the ropes binding Cindy and helps her escape to safety. As they travel back to Fabletown, they make a detour at Cinderella's hotel where she advises Dickory to hide. She doesn't want the mundy man she spent the night with to see a talking mouse in her room.[6]
Cinderella's investigation takes her and Dickory back to Ultima Thule, where the Fairy Godmother has managed to escape from her cell. Searching the cell for clues, Cinderella has Dickory search a loose brick, and he discovers the Godmother's wand hidden behind it. Cindy finds the Fairy Godmother in the Netherlands, where the Fairy Godmother is getting high in a local coffee shop. Unfortunately, the Fairy Godmother's new friends are defensive, and it is only the sight of Dickory — a talking mouse — threatening to eat their souls that makes them back off.[7]
Cinderella has to undergo the experience of holding her dying Fairy Godmother in her arms, wounded by a gang of ninja rats. Though the assassins are long gone, Dickory sends for the king's men, who were able to put Humpty Dumpty together again, as they are good with head wounds. While rooting through the Fairy Godmother's purse, he discoveres a plane ticket to India. Unfortunately, the plane will be leaving in just ninety minutes, and Cinderella has to go, leaving Dickory to handle things there, using magic to keep the godmother alive until the authorities arrive.[8]
In Fabletown, Dickory manages to get an injured Fairy Godmother medical attention in Fabletown, despite her having taken a bullet to the head. With frustration, what appears to be one of the Three Blind Mice waits for Dickory to leave him alone with her, but he is called away by his companions before that happens. Alone with her instead, Dickory turns on a TV in hopes of stimulating the godmother into a waking state, and helping her brain injury heal.[9]
Powers and abilities
Time acceleration: Dickory can make time around him move slower that he seems so fast that he can move between the ticks of a clock.[1]
