~ Bonny Lamb to the milkmaid, Fairest #31 — "Super-Lamb, the Just Us League of Animals, and Other Unexpected Tails: Chapter Five of The Clamour for Glamour" |
Bonny Lamb is a young animal Fable who lives at the Farm and is one of the lambs of Bo Peep. She first appears in Fables #98 — "Red Dawn, Chapter Five of Rose Red." Bonny Lamb is among the Fables auditioning for Pinocchio's super team, but is dismissed due to her lack of superpowers. Inspired by Pinocchio's superhero comics, she goes on to form her own team of animal Fable superheroes, the Just Us League of Animals; with disastrous results. When Mary's garden is wrecked during a training session, Bonny Lamb is sentenced to two months of service as Mary's new little lamb.
History
Threat of Mister Dark
Bonny Lamb is a member of Bo Peep's sheep flock.[1] She can be seen among the Fables gathered outside the Farm's main building as Rose Red, the leader of the Farm, addresses her fellow Fables after finally overcoming her long depression.[3]
Bonny Lamb is among the Fables auditioning for Pinocchio's super team, and even suggests the superhero name Super Lamb for herself. Despite her attempts to argue that "super cute" should count as a superpower, she is ultimately dismissed due to her lack of actual abilities.[1]
Just Us League of Animals
One day, Bonny Lamb joins the other animal Fables in the barn to hear Reynard the Fox's latest tales of his adventures. The newly recruited knight of Rose Red's new Round Table has gained the power to switch between human and fox forms whenever he desires, and everyone is eager to hear about his experiences. The young sheep is captivated by Reynard's tale of valiant Fable knights fighting against powerful super villains. After Reynard leaves, Mister Sunflower rallies the animal Fables to speak up and demand the glamours that Prince Charming had promised them when he was elected mayor. The lamb and many other animal Fables join him as he leads a raucous protest in the center of the Farm. They shout for their glamours and hold up signs as they make their voices heard.[4]
The following morning, the lamb is present when King Cole and Rose Red gather the Fables in the Farm square, announcing that the 13th Floor magicians will produce five glamours that can be shared between animals, giving them all a chance to experience life outside their usual surroundings for a brief time.[5]
While being milked by the milkmaid in the barn, the cow Luna is instructed to stop fidgeting. Luna, on the other hand, explains that her restlessness is a result of the hyperactive Bonny Lamb constantly running around her, making it difficult to remain calm. Bonny Lamb stumbles upon a box and curiously asks about its contents. Luna explains that the box contains books that Pinocchio didn't want taking up space in the blacksmith's lodge. To prevent his father Geppetto from throwing them away, he stashed them in the barn for safekeeping. As soon as Bonny Lamb opens the box, she is ecstatic to find it filled with comic books. The milkmaid cautions her not to touch others' belongings, but Luna interrupts and tells her it's a waste of time; Bonny Lamb always lives in her own fantasy world. Nevertheless, Bonny Lamb eagerly flips through the pages of the comics, and admits that she wishes that Pinocchio had picked her for his Super Team. Bonny Lamb is reminded by the milkmaid to appreciate the fact that they never had to confront Mister Dark.[2]
Inspired by the stories, Bonny Lamb creates her own superhero animal Fable team who call themselves the Just Us League of Animals (with "Just Us League" being an obvious reference to the Justice League). Although Thumbelina and Brock Blueheart turn down the offer, the little dog and Boo Bear II are both excited to volunteer, with Red Cap joining in as well. The lamb picks the name Super Lamb for herself and recommends the name "Spotty Dog" for the dog, but the latter chooses to go by the title of the Bark Knight (an obvious pun on "the Dark Knight," Batman's nickname). A training course is set up by the team with great enthusiasm, but Mary wonders how she could possibly focus with the loud noise going on. The milkmaid asks them to go play somewhere else, but Bonny Lamb counters that this is important hero business, not play.[2]
However, during the initial training session the next day, an unexpected incident occurs where the little dog and Bonny Lamb are unintentionally launched through the air in a barrel, resulting in the unfortunate destruction of Mary's garden. In a moment of frustration, Mary picks up Bonny Lamb by her superhero cape. The milkmaid warns Mary to be careful with the lamb, believing it was an unintentional mistake. However, Mary believes the lamb must face consequences and decides to seek out Sergeant Wilfred. She carries the lamb away, still gripping it by the cape. Shr storms into the Farm office with Bonny Lamb in tow, demanding that Clara and Wilfred take immediate action against this troublemaker, who has destroyed her garden and crushed all her flowers. Mister Sunflower witnesses this and is horrified at the loss of innocent plant life, calling Bonny Lamb a murderer. Wilfred sentences Bonny Lamb to two months of service as Mary's new little lamb, tasked with helping to restore her garden and completing any other tasks requested by Mary. The mention of "anything" sparks an idea in Mary's mind.[2]
The glamour Lottery
Seeing this as the perfect chance for payback, Mary adorns the lamb in a frilly pink outfit and parades her around on a leash, while Mary strolls toward the grand Lottery drawing. This causes Bonny Lamb to feel embarrassed and humiliated. Mary teasingly reminds Bonny Lamb that her that "everywhere that Mary goes, her lamb is sure to go." The two attend the Lottery drawing, where Bonny Lamb is declared the lucky winner of one of the highly coveted glamours. But Mary reminds her that this does not exempt her from fulfilling her reparations as a human.[2]
During Glamour Day, when the winners are bestowed with their rewards, the lamb is paired with Mary as her human chaperone. But due to a mishap by Mister Sunflower, not only is Bonny Lamb glamoured as a human, but Mary is completely transformed into a lamb. Seeking retaliation for her earlier embarrassment, Bonny Lamb chases after Mary, declaring that for her first taste of human food, she has a craving for lamb chops. The milkmaid chases after them, scolding Bonny Lamb for harassing Mary. But the lamb persists in its pursuit and teasingly nicknames Mary "mint sauce Mary!" Thankfully, Morgan le Fay is able to fix the problem and change Mary back to her original form. The lamb smugly reminds Mary that it must be less fun for her when she is not playing the role of a shepherdess.[6]
