~ Blossom to her animal companions in Fables #150 — "The Summer Prophecy" |
Blossom Wolf is a human-wolf-wind hybrid Fable who is the second child of Bigby Wolf and Snow White. She first appears in Fables #30 — "The Cruel, Hot Summer." Blossom goes on to become the caretaker of an entire world.
History
Early life
Blossom and her six siblings were conceived when Snow White and Bigby Wolf had a one-night stand whilst under the control of a potion provided by Bluebeard. Bigby's heightened senses informed him of this brief affair, but to ensure survival and minimize Snow's panic, he decided not to tell her. Unfortunately, Snow had been impregnated.
Several months later, she gave birth to her children after the battle against the wooden soldiers. The name "Blossom" came to Snow White because of her resemblance to Rose Red, with her vibrant red fur. It was apparent from the start that her children had inherited the wolf traits from their father. This meant they could not live in New York but had to move to the Farm, separating the cubs from Bigby.[5]
Because of their heritage, the children's natural default for travel was flight. Since Bigby was gone, and had never had that problem, their grandfather the North Wind was given that responsibility. The children, under the tutelage of their grandfather, the North Wind, gained the ability to control their flight as well as change their forms from human, werewolf or fully lupine.
After their birth, there was a string of sudden deaths. The North Wind, who had arrived to see his grandchildren, was able to explain to their mother the existence of zephyrs. They were able to discover the cause. One of the seven, later named Ghost by Bigby, was born with a birth defect; he was a zephyr, a rogue wind whose invisible nature meant his parents were initially unaware of his existence. This entity fed off the air of living beings, accidentally killing them before he learned control. Snow White, after a rash of deaths, discovers that they were inadvertently caused by her last child. She sends Ghost to find his self-exiled father.
Growing up
The family has since been reunited. On their fifth birthday, the other six cubs were introduced to Ghost, but were sworn to secrecy as to his existence. Even from telling Rose Red, as she is not a "wolf."
During the war to reclaim the Homelands, Wolf Manor become the nerve center of Fabletown's war operations. Because of this, Snow became the unofficial commander-in-chief while her husband, Bigby, ran operations at Fort Bravo, Prince Charming was on the Glory, and Beast commanded the defense procedures at Fabletown. Rose watched after the cubs to ensure that they didn't bother the soldiers, who obviously wouldn't appreciate someone suddenly shouting at them, "Bang, you're dead!"
The cubs would later travel with their parents to their grandfather's castle. During the trip, the cubs were attacked by their six uncles. Though young, they were able to keep out of their grasp and fend them off until their father was able to save them. Afterward their uncles were turned into goldfish and left to the cubs' mercy.
The prophecy
At some point, Ozma reveals a prophecy to Ambrose about him and the other cubs:
- The first child will be a king,
- The second child a pauper.
- The third will do an evil thing.
- The fourth will die to stop her.
- The fifth will be a hero bold.
- The sixth will judge the rest.
- The seventh lives to ages old, and is by heaven blessed.
The first of the seven prophecies was fulfilled when Winter officially became King of the North (the position previously held by her grandfather).[6]
The third and fourth child prophecies occurred when Therese was revealed as the third child, doing "an evil thing" by murdering Mountbatten for his flesh and ordering the wooden toys of her kingdom burned to eat it.[7] Darien is revealed as the fourth child, as he sacrificed himself to a magic cauldron so that Therese could have food, and thus, end her insanity.
The Battle of Fabletown
After Therese returned home, aged into adulthood, Ambrose chastised her for belittling Darien's sacrifice. When Bigby was under the control of Leigh Duglas, Blossom and her siblings were nearly killed by their corrupted father. However, Conner managed to snap Bigby back into his true self, and he was happily reunited with his wife and children.
The Black Forest
After Rose Red calls off the war between Snow White and her forces,[8] the Wolf family relocates to the Hesse and build[9] a new manor house for themselves[10] in Bigby's ancestral home in the Black Forest.[9] While building the new manor, Bigby sends his four remaining children, including Blossom, into the forest to have an adventure, and forbids them from coming back until they have a great story to tell. Blossom's adventure begins when she stumbles across a boxed spirit who begs for her to release them.[11]
The voice belongs to Herne, the son of the forest god Herne. After Blossom releases them both from captivity, she and the younger Herne enter into a romantic relationship.[12] Five years later,[10] the two plan to find and settle down in a secluded hunting paradise together; a world vast and untouched, in need of its own Lord Protector, just like Herne's father in the Black Forest, and brimming with all kinds of creatures. However, their dreams are tragically cut short when Herne is murdered by Tinker Bell on Peter Pan's orders.[13]
Caretaker of Yankum
Eventually, Blossom decides to move out of the Wolf family home and find a place of her own:[3] Yankum, her own private hunting world,[2] which she manages as its caretaker.[14] It is the fulfillment of the dream she and Herne once shared,[13] in a world that she knows Herne would have loved.[3] Yankum is home to countless examples of megafauna that put anything that evolved on Earth to shame. She travels with a "pack" of various large predators and monsters, acting as a self-appointed goddess of nature, protecting Yankum's wildlife from hunters and protecting anyone who stumbles into her world from the predators who live there. She oversees the birthings and fresh growth of spring and the culling of the weak before the trials of winter.[2] Although the world is owned by Blossom,[14] she states that her ownership is more of a caretaker's authority than possession.[2]
In time, Blossom seeks revenge[3] for Pan's murder of Herne, whom she loved deeply.[13] She periodically transforms into a colossal viper and coils her way down to Pan's prison deep down in the lowest depths of the Hesse, burning his skin by dripping venom from her fangs onto him. His spasms are powerful enough to rock the earth, causing earthquakes that periodically strike the Hesse.[3]
At the latest Wolf family reunion, about a millennia after the Battle of Fabletown, Blossom talks about the world she owns, saying that she thinks of it as her personal hunting reserve. While there are people living there now, all who do so with her permission.[14]
Personality
Blossom seems to be have inherited some stereotypical "fairy-tale princess" qualities. She is often seen with cute, cuddly forest creatures and butterflies following her around.
In her adulthood, Blossom proves to be a capable hunter and "ruler" of an entire world.[2]
Physical appearance
Blossom has red hair, reminiscent of her aunt Rose Red, and green eyes. Her wolf form also has red fur.
Powers and abilities
- Cold immunity: All of the Wolf cubs are impervious to cold[15] and need no protection from the elements.[16] While Blossom does perceive cold, it is in a manner that is incomparable to the dull senses of mortals. The cold air is a source of delight for her, rather than a hardship; the attire she chooses is motivated by reasons other than shielding herself from the elements.[2]
- Flight: Like her siblings, Blossom can fly.[17]
- Shapeshifting: Blossom can transform between her human form and wolf form at will.[18] According to her grandfather, Blossom and her siblings can assume a variety of other forms with proper training.[17] She has been known to shapeshift into a large gorilla[19] and a colossal viper,[3] and states that she can easily shapeshift into a racing falcon, a dragon, or a gust of wind.[20]
- Supernatural longevity: Blossom 's unique heritage evidently affords her some sort of supernatural longevity. Even after a millennia, Blossom is shown to retain the vitality and appearance of a young woman.[14]
Etymology
Snow White named her "Blossom" due to her vibrant red fur that reminded Snow of her sister Rose Red's crimson locks.[21] The family name Wolf[1] is an obvious reference to her lupine nature, particularly given that her father is named Bigby Wolf.
Trivia
In the final issue of Fables (before being revived), Blossom was confirmed to be the second child born to Snow White and Bigby Wolf. She is the one the prophecy says is destined to be a pauper, though she argues over the exact definition of that term, as she might not have anything in the way of material wealth, but she has her world, her hunts and her companions and in those, she is rich beyond compare.[2]
