You...You monsters! Both of you! I told you everything, and then you take away the only thing I have in this world! You've doomed me! Do you understand that? You horrible, twisted, goddamned monsters!
~ Aunty Greenleaf to Snow White and Bigby Wolf in Fables: The Wolf Among Us #29 — "Chapter Twenty—Nine"

Aunty Greenleaf is a rogue Fable witch who lives in New York City, but is not one of the 13th Floor magicians. She first appears in the form of a white deer in a flashback from Salem in Fables: The Wolf Among Us #13 — "Chapter Thirteen."

History

Early life

According to Greenleaf, she was born deep in the woods, from a jackal and a white deer.[1]

Salem

Back in 17th century Salem, Bigby Wolf sees a chalk-white doe running through the woods, and follows it. The mysterious deer leads him to a group of women dancing naked in the forest in a pagan ritual.[2] After the encounter, he asks a little girl (who first appears to be Abigail Williams in disguise,[3] but is later revealed to be Greenleaf glamoured as her[1]) about the animal. The girl tells him that the deer has lived a great long while in the New World, is faster and cleverer than any wolf, has never been caught and never will be.[3]

Fabletown

In modern-day Fabletown, Bigby finds a box with a glamour spell decorated with the motif of the white deer, and recognizes Aunty Greenleaf from the Salem incident.[2] While tracking down Ichabod Crane, he learns from Bufkin that Crane made a call to a witch before he fled the Woodlands, setting an appointment to meet her at 2:00 A.M. He then subsequently reports this to Snow White.[4] Through his subsequent investigation, he learns her address, and suspects that Greenleaf is selling illegal glamours.[5] He and Snow head to Greenleaf's New York apartment to try to catch Crane.[6]

Upon arrival, they are greeted by a young girl named Rachel, who claims that Greenleaf is her mother. She warily lets the two in to investigate, but insistently says that no one has been to the apartment but her. When Bigby finds a glamour box on a desk, Rachel panics, begging him not to touch it. Bigby opens it anyway, and Rachel transforms into Greenleaf.[6]

Bigby reveals that he still remembers Greenleaf from Salem, and he and Snow angrily demands that she tell them everything she knows, but Greenleaf stubbornly refuses, asserting that Crane has powerful friends. Her composure is broken when Snow threatens to burn her tree, a relic from the Homelands that she uses to create illegal glamours that she sells to Fables who cannot afford the expensive "official" glamours from the 13th Floor magicians. In a panic, she reveals that Crane had indeed visited her, but left for the Pudding & Pie to try and get answers out of the girls working there using her Ring of Dispel. However, over time the ring lost its power and no longer works.[1]

Snow still insists that they burn the tree, which Bigby can tell, from the scent, is the same tree that the girls danced around back in Salem. He sets it on fire with his lighter and the two walk out as Greenleaf screams in despair, calling the two monsters.[1]

During the Crooked Man's trial, Aunty Greenleaf is in attendance as Bigby ultimately decides to detain him until a proper and just trial can be held.[7]

The Silverling

In the Silvering, Abigail rebuilds Mary's glass baby for the Crooked Man and his allies.[8] The group attempts to activate its teleportation powers with the heart of Grendel's mother. However, the ritual fails,[9] and they find themselves seeking out Aunty Greenleaf,[10] who succeeds.[11] Using the baby, Greenleaf and the rest of the Crooked Man's gang are transported to Castle Allerleirauh in the Homelands.[12]

Original source

In American folklore, Aunty Greenleaf is a witch who resided in Brookhaven, New York during the early eighteenth century. She was known to keep to herself and had a vast knowledge of herbal remedies which she sold to local townsfolk. Her deep understanding of the mysterious arts earned her mistrust from those around her, leading people to believe she had sinister motives. Rumors of terror began to spread. Pigs had become inexplicably sick. Women declared that, no matter how much they churned, their cream would not thicken into butter. When news spread of a completely white deer being spotted in the woods, people in town took it as an ill omen. The deer was pursued and, eventually, wounded with silver bullets before it managed to run away. Eventually, Greenleaf was discovered in her cabin, moaning in agony. The local physician removed three silver bullets from her back. Not long after, Greenleaf passed away, and the white deer was never seen again.[13]

"Another New York witch, Aunty Greenleaf, was so famous that her story has passed into folklore. Said to have lived in Brookhaven, N.Y., in the early 18th century, Greenleaf was a loner with “a profound knowledge of herbal remedies, which she sold to the townsfolk,” Ferrara writes. “This arcane knowledge resulted in a local suspicion of her potential malevolent intentions.” The scary stories spread. Hogs mysteriously grew ill. Women complained that, no matter how hard they churned, their cream wouldn't turn into butter. When reports surfaced of an all-white deer in the woods, townspeople took it as an ominous sign. The deer was tracked – and shot, with silver bullets – but escaped. Later, Greenleaf was found in her cabin, moaning in pain. The town doctor extracted three silver bullets from her back. Greenleaf died shortly afterward – and the white deer was not seen again."
